defense of wyrmrest temple

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any questions or article suggestions you’d like to see covered here.

The first half of the Dragon Soul raid consists of knocking out a few of Deathwing’s commanders that are attacking Wyrmrest Temple. After toppling the first four bosses of Dragon Soul, we finally see Deathwing face-to-face at the peak of the temple. He’s still too busy to attack us himself, instead sending a couple of his additional underlings our way.

Our first challenge will be overcoming Ultraxion, Deathwing’s favorite twilight dragon. He’s an easy target for rogues and is just about as simple for us as Warlord Zon’ozz. After that, we board an airship to face Warmaster Blackhorn and his Twilight infantry. Finally, we confront Deathwing in two separate encounters, each with its own challenges.

We fight Ultraxion from the roof of Wyrmrest Temple, as he’s too massive to fit inside. He’ll spend most of the encounter cleaving the entire raid, which makes Feint an amazing tool here. Use it on cooldown for the entire fight. Unfortunately for rogues, we’re not able to get behind Ultraxion, due to his positioning over the ledge of the temple roof. While Ultraxion has a buff that prevents him from parrying our frontal attacks, we’re not able to use any positional attacks like Backstab or Ambush.

Oh, hey, it’s a sheer drop into nothingness. Reminds me of one of the approximately 1,000 mountains I’ve fallen off while playing Skyrim this week. For a relatively easy sandbox game, I’ve died a truly depressing number of times. But then again, we’ve been there before. Whether stepping on a land mine in Fallout 3, getting caught stealing by the guards in Morrowind, or simply being savaged by angry mutant bears in just about all of its games, Bethesda Softworks will always find new and inventive ways to kill me. How has your Skyrim adventure been going, readers? (Thanks to Bakthar of Trouble and Strife on Khaz’goroth [US-H] for the screenshot!)

Jinx, purveyor of all things World of Warcraft-themed, has debuted some of its new designs for the fall lineup of WoW-inspired clothing. The new designs include a lineup of shirts signaling a player’s Dungeon Finder role (tank, DPS, healer) and some new Deathwing designs just in time for patch 4.3. In true Jinx spirit, women’s sizes and versions are available for all of the new fall designs.

Jinx’s designs incorporate WoW elements as part of their motif or in straight-out reference the game, so there is always something for everyone, which I appreciate. I’m the guy who will wear a video game shirt but not something that says “I am a mage” on it. The new role icon shirts are particularly cool to me, since I love minimalistic video game designs on T-shirts and really want that tank shirt. See, world? You need me in your dungeon queue.

Hopefully, Jinx will have just as large of a showing at BlizzCon this year as it did last year, with a gigantic booth and that crazy murloc hoodie that had me scared and amazed me simultaneously. Check out the new fall lineup over at Jinx.

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.

Work warning: Guild chatter and text in these videos contain the occasional snippet of strong language.

Summer break tugging your raiding schedule to shreds? Instead of stressing out about it, maybe it’s time to shine your organizational mojo on something a little more fun: a Summer Games event. Time and Tide of Earthen Ring (EU) has done just that, building a weekend of off-season fun and games spanning multiple guilds and even both factions. This may not be the first time we’ve featured articles about trivia contests, funny challenges and even other special events centering on games before — but I’m not sure we’ve ever seen anything as well-planned as these Summer Games.

Not content to simply entertain its own, Time and Tide opened the event realm-wide this year in a savvy recruiting move that undoubtedly raised their guild’s profile and sparked plenty of interest from other players. You’ll want to read our interview with GM and Summer Games organizer Firelash, if for no other reason than to snag some sweet ideas for a morale-boosting, team-bonding, raider-recruiting event of your own!

The Classifieds brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness shout-outs to players who make your WoW sessions memorable.

As a WoW Insider spouse discovered last night, things change in the world of WoW information. This guy, we’ll call him Bean, was working on a heroic and needed to get the rundown on a boss fight. Acting out of years of habit, he loaded up Wowwiki on his PC and immediately picked up a virus.

(It’s important you keep an eye out on your security, too. Do you have an authenticator, as well? If not, you should get one.)

There are other options out there for you. Wowpedia is run by the admins who left Wowwiki back in October 2010. Learn to Raid is a fantastic video resource for many fights. Of course, WoW Insider also has you covered with ongoing guides to things like dungeons and raids (in our Guide to Cataclysm), holidays like Children’s Week, game lore, and tons of other information.

Depending on how much you know about Horde lore, you may believe that Cairne was killed in cold blood by the evil despot Garrosh. Or you may believe the up-and-coming Garrosh was cruelly betrayed by a Horde member and framed for the murder of the gentle tauren leader.

This video sheds some interesting light on The Fall of Cairne. It sticks relatively close to the lore of the game, and it does a good job of presenting “the other side of the story.”

There are two things that hold back my unmitigated love of this video. First, the vocals seem a little tinny in places. This is a challenge a lot of dialogue-driven movies have, since it can be hard to get audio compression just right. Second, the storyline feels a little decompressed; there are a few reaction and framing shots that could be a little shorter.

I adore this choice of topic, though, and I hope to see Captlightning keep going.
